Dogs barked like wild animals, running and occasionally doing an acrobatic spin out of sheer excitement. We ran. I had no trouble keeping up with the dogs, and always had a glimpse of our prey. Humorously, I noticed some of the heavier men had started panting. And then we were coming upon the prey, circling around it, a split second from the spilling of blood and the spoils of fame.
I stopped.
In that one moment, I stopped. And I saw the creature whose life we were about to take. A unicorn. Wildly beautiful and full of fear, like a child before a drunken man's hand.
My spear dropped to the ground.
It was like my life had been slowed from hours to seconds, each second more precious than the next. I watched as the beautiful white streak reared viciously, out of fear, and crashed its heavy hooves against the ribs of the man behind her. I watched as the innocent horn pierced one of the dogs and sprayed its blood with a fling of her head.
