A video on TedEd follows the life of animated Roman teenage girls. For some reason, I had always overlooked the fact that there would be teenagers in Rome. I never really thought about it, or wondered what that life would be like. I focused on my own life, and that was enough for me.
However, this video gave me new perspective.
If I were a Roman, who would I be?
Well, to start with, I would definitely be married by 17 years old. That would be a strange marriage, stuck with someone I didn't love, maybe not even liked. I would have children. At least, I hope I would have children, because otherwise I would be viewed as a failure of a wife. I would know how to weave clothing for my not-so-loving husband and children. I would have limited freedom.
The more I consider who I would be as a Roman, the more I am glad that I'm not. While living in Rome during that time period would be interesting, I was born in 21st century US for a reason.
