To begin our adventure into medieval times, we were recently asked to observe a tapestry portraying a medieval garden. This garden was teeming with people, all with weapons of some sort and wearing similar clothing. There were also animals with almost human expressions, and a unicorn. Once I took these facts into consideration, I was able to piece together that the image was of a hunt taking place in some sort of garden. A tapestry, we learned, was an elaborate woven image used as decoration. Soon, we learned the basic types of medieval gardens- from cloister and pleasure gardens to kitchen and medicinal ones. I personally did not like the geometric nature of the cloister gardens- I prefer nature to be allowed to be its wild self, not forcefully contained within rectangles. Overall, my week studying the gardens of my ancestors was very informative, and proved to me just how intelligent and diligent the people of the "Dark Ages" really were.
